FRAUDSTERS have been trying to con money out of businesses by pretending to be selling advertising space on behalf of Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service.
A spokesperson for the service has stressed that it is not touting for advertisers at the moment and has offered advice to anyone contacted.
They said: "We're aware that salespeople have been contacting businesses and giving the impression they are acting for the service.
"We are not currently asking local traders to support us by advertising in a magazine."
If you receive an unexpected call that you are not sure is from DSFRS, end the call and (if possible) call the service from a different phone.
If you are concerned that a caller is not genuinely from the fire service, follow these steps:
Make a note of the caller's name and number;
Hang up the phone;
Don’t call the number back directly;
Contact Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service to verify if the call you have received is genuine.
You can call on 01392 872200 or email comments@dsfire.gov.uk.
The spokesperson added: "Unfortunately, there have been instances where fraudulent salespeople have contacted businesses claiming to be acting for the Service. This should be reported to the police."
