MARCUS Trescothick re-wrote the record books back in July 2014.

On his way to a battling 128 against Lancashire at Taunton in the first week of July 2014, he set the record for the most runs at the County Ground.

At the start of his innings Trescothick had scored 7,226 runs at the County Ground in Taunton during his 21 year career, but when he hit his third run of the day he passed the previous record.

The previous record holder was Lionel Palairet, who played for Somerset between 1890 and 1909, with 7228.

Palairet achieved his total from 108 innings while Trescothick has scored his runs from 109.

Trescothick was blissfully unaware of his achievement and soon after leaving the field on Monday unbeaten on 107 he said: “It’s really nice to hear that I have broken that record, although I have to admit that I didn’t know anything about it until somebody told me just now.

“I had no idea what the situation was but it is quite a nice honour to think that you have scored more first class runs here at Taunton than anybody else who has played the game in the history of Somerset.

“I am walking in the shadows of people who have played here over the years, the greats of the game, so to think you are matching up and scoring more runs than those legends means a lot to me.

“What is interesting to me is that my runs have come from a similar number of runs than the previous record holder."
