THE two politicians vying to be our next Prime Minister were in Somerset this week looking to drum up support for their campaigns.
And it was Liz Truss rather than Rishi Sunak who won the backing of previously undecided county councillor Cllr Connor Payne.
After hearing Conservative Cllr Payne was undecided on who he would be voting for in the party members ballot, both candidates invited him to meet up.
First up in Taunton on Monday (August 1) was Mr Sunak, whose resignation as Chancellor of the Exchequer sparked events that led to Boris Johnson announcing he would step down as Prime Minister.
Then Foreign Secretary Ms Truss met up with Cllr Payne in Yeovil the following day.
Afterwards, he said: "I've made my mind up to support Liz.
"She was interested in what I had to say.
"Her policy priorities align much better with what I believe in.
"Her expertise, experience and knowledge of the global system giver her a headstart over Rishi."
