A VACANT ancillary space in Minehead town centre that was previously occupied by Barclays could become a new residential dwelling.
A planning application has been submitted to convert a former coach house connected to the rear of the former bank into a one-bedroom living space.
The coach house was used by Barclays (5 The Parade, Minehead) for ancillary storage and staff hospitality facilities.
A design and access statement provided to Somerset West and Taunton Council (SWT) said: “The retail unit was previously occupied by Barclays bank but is now left vacant.
“As part of the wider site, the retail unit itself is a three-storey, mid-terraced building with a series of single and two-storey add-ons to the rear and fronts the main high street of The Parade.
“The proposed application relates to the conversion of the former Coach House, which is a vacant ancillary space that services the main retail unit and is set at its rear.
“The former Coach House is a two-storey detached building which fronts Market House Lane. The space is currently used as a store.”
A neighbouring property has already received planning permission to be converted into residential accommodation.
The application added: “There will be a no changes to the existing appearance of the building as a result of the works.
“The conversion of the former Coach House will improve the appearance of the vacant building though minor internal alterations.
“The proposed development will preserve and enhance the overall character and appearance of the Conservation Area and avoid any impact to any nearby listed building.”
Barclays closed its Minehead branch in June 2019 after the bank said customer usage declined due to a rise in mobile and online banking.
