ONE of the world's top trumpet players is running a two-day masterclass in the run-up to Christmas in a first for Taunton.
Philippe Schartz, principal trumpet with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, will conduct the sessions at the Luis Martelo Music Store and Music School in the county town.
The event on Monday and Tuesday, December 19 and 20 will culminate in a masterclass concert at Taunton Minster - formerly St Mary Magdalene Church.
Mr Martelo, whose music store and school is located in Mitre House, at the back of the Sangha House, in Tower Street, said: "This is something never done at this level in Taunton.
"It is an amazing opportunity for anyone dreaming of becoming a professional, joining a professional orchestra, learning how to play better and how to do auditions.
"Anyone of any level and any age can join the masterclass."
The masterclasses run from 10am to 4.30pm both days, costing £20 overall, with a certificate presented at the end and coffee and tea supplied during breaks.
The concert is at 7.30pm on the Tuesday, with members of the public invited to make a donation on the door to support the Minster and thanks Philippe.
Luxembourg-born Philippe Schartz is one of the most exciting trumpeters in the world and has has developed a highly successful career as an orchestral and chamber musician as well as a soloist.
He has previously played with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra.
He has performed to critical acclaim with conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Pierre Boulez and Bernard Haitink.
His solo career includes many recitals and concertos across Europe as well as making four solo CD recordings.
In addition, he has been broadcasted on numerous radio and TV stations including the BBC and diverse European networks.
He also enjoys teaching as part of the staff at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, and has travelled around the world giving masterclasses and educational workshops including at the Royal College of Music, Northwestern University of Chicago and Queens University Belfast Music School.
