PEOPLE are being urged to air their views on the name of the constituency they'll be voting in at the next General Election.

The Boundary Commission is proposing changes to the make up of certain constituencies across the country.

Under the proposals, the current Taunton Deane patch would include Taunton and Wellington and a number of villages.

But Bishops Lydeard, Oake, Cotford St Luke and Wiveliscombe would be removed from Taunton and included as part of a new Tiverton and Minehead constituency.

The commission has suggested the new constituency should be named Taunton, but there are plenty of people who want to see it called Taunton and Wellington.

Among them are the two main candidates in the next General Election.

Conservative Taunton Deane MP Rebecca Pow said: “I was very pleased that the Boundary Commission accepted representations to include Norton Fitzwarren and Staplegrove in the new constituency of Taunton.

“However, I was disappointed that ‘Wellington’ was not included in the new constituency name.

“Given the historical, economic, and cultural importance of Wellington, which is a key part of the new constituency, I made written representations and attended the public hearing in Bath to make the case for the name of the constituency to be ‘Taunton and Wellington’.

“I will be making further such representations to the commission to reiterate this call.

“To add weight to this proposal, I would urge as many people as possible from Wellington, who would also like to see the name change, to submit this suggestion to the commission by December 5.”

Gideon Amos, the Lib Dem Parliamentary candidate at the next General Election, also supports the campaign.

He said: “The new law passed by the Conservatives that’s pushing Langford Budville, Bishops Lydeard, Cotford St Luke, Oake and Milverton out into a constituency extending into Devon is totally illogical.

“These places are all historically part of our community and we need to stand up for our local constituency and ensure no other areas are removed.

“That is a key reason why I’ve written to the Boundary Commission asking for the name of our new constituency to be changed to ‘Taunton and Wellington’ – to recognise Wellington’s distinct history and the importance which all of us as local people in and around the town place on it."
