TAUNTON’S newest coffee and wine bar has officially opened its doors to the public and already is attracting locals in with its modern and exotic décor.

We decided to check out the new bar earlier this week and thoroughly enjoyed what the venue has to offer.

Layout

The entrance to the bar is on East Street and once you enter to are greeted by the friendly staff at the bar in the centre of the venue.

To the right, there is a dining area which is somewhat private and intimate, catering for customers looking to enjoy a meal in a space separate from the bar.

Around the bar area there are stools and high-set tables which allows for a more communal space. On the evening we went there was also a DJ playing which is something that will be a common feature on most nights.

Then to the left side of the venue is more tables and chairs in both restaurant layout and also casual seating spaces, more suited to people who are enjoying a coffee in the day or perhaps a wine in the evening.

Upstairs there is more dining space as well as a very modern and fresh private dining room that is available to large groups or private events.

The toilets and kitchen are also located upstairs.

Vibe

The lighting, the furniture, and the music all set the tone for what felt like a really cool and contemporary bar.

There was a good mix of people in the bar when we went and we feel like that will be standard as the appeal of this new venture will attract a wide range of people.

The staff were friendly and attentive and the atmosphere was positive. That was helped, I believe, by the DJ who was playing relaxed music throughout the evening.

Overall there was a vibe of excitement in a way that a venue like this has opened in Taunton and I can see that mood continuing as more people try the Deckhouse bar.

Prices

First off, let’s start with the coffee prices. A cappuccino at Deckhouse costs £3.20, a latte is £3.30 and espressos are £2.

For reference, a cappuccino at Costa Coffee is around £3.45 and a latte is the same (depending on which location).

The wine at Deckhouse is varied in price with the cheapest glass being a Bodegas Arloren at £5.30 (£22.50 a bottle) and the most expensive glass is a Domaine Bousquet Malbec Reserve at £9.10 (£35 a bottle).

Some of the wine is only sold by the bottle and the most expensive bottle is a Barolo Del Comune Di Serralunga D’Alba at £79.

The cheapest is The Goose Cabernet Sauvignon at £36.

Our thoughts

We felt as though Deckhouse was a vibrant and modern bar that caters for a large market of people in the area.

It would be a great spot for a date night in the evening, after work drinks, catching up with friends or even a coffee during the day while you are out shopping in the town centre.

The prices of both the coffee and wine seemed reasonable and add in the setting it makes for an overall great product.

We would recommend giving it a try for yourself, it is an exciting new venture in the heart of our county town.
