A YOUNG filmmaker from Taunton has seen his short film premiered on the big screen in Bridgwater after earning a commission with his idea.
In January, two commissions were offered to people aged 25 and under by Somerset Film, BFI Film Academy South West and Watershed.
The initiative marked the 25th anniversary of the incorporation of Somerset Film, a charity that encourages the use of digital media in the county.
Ralph Hutchins of Taunton and James Gardner of Brent Knoll worked on their scripts over the summer after successfully pitching their ideas.
They received money towards production costs and access to equipment and professional mentoring.
On December 1, their films were premiered at the new Scott Cinemas venue at Northgate Yard in Bridgwater.
Somerset Film creative director Deb Richardson said: “It’s a real challenge to find ideas that can work in just a few pages and we were delighted to read so many fantastic proposals.
“James and Ralph’s scripts really stood out. They explore ideas around climate change and both reflect aspects of life in Somerset.”
Another screening is scheduled to take place in March at the Watershed in Bristol.
Ralph's film, Bonfires, tells the story of Oscar and the illegal burning of waste. James' film, Southfield Hill, explores our changing landscape through housing development.
They are both now in the process of entering film festivals.
The premieres were part of a larger celebration marking 25 years of Somerset Film, which saw activities and performances at the Engine Room in Bridgwater.
Finch scriptwriter Craig Luck, who began his film career at Somerset Film, said: “What a fantastic evening!
“I’m thrilled to have been a part of it. How exciting that the opportunity for new filmmakers is growing.”
It operates The Engine Room, a community media centre in Bridgwater and base for its activities, which take place throughout the county.
