THE Snug Bookshop and Café, in Huish Episcopi, has been shortlisted for the Sole to Sole category at this year’s Small Awards.
The Small Awards is a nationwide search for the smallest and greatest firms in the UK across all sectors and is organised annually by Small Business Britain.
The Snug bookshop was founded in 2018 in Bridgwater and, after overcoming losing the entire roof and suffering devastating water damage in 2021, the indefatigable owner relocated to a new building in Langport.
It has been chosen as one of just eight finalists for the Sole to Sole category for best self-employed small business owner that recognises sole traders and celebrates the tenacity and drive it takes to go it alone.
Sam Carr, owner of the Snug Bookshop and Café, said: “The last 18 months have not been easy, but having already made it through a global pandemic, I was determined to find The Snug a new home, and continue the outreach work with schools.
"I had to be very resourceful to keep the business going, which enabled me to be able to build a new, welcoming community space for everyone.
"I am really honoured and overwhelmed to be shortlisted – although to be honest, I’m just really glad to still be open.”
Judged by a panel of industry experts, the winners of all categories, along with the overall winner of Small Business of the Year, will be announced at a glittering awards night in London on May 18.
Michelle Ovens, founder of Small Business Britain, said: "The Small Awards is all about celebrating the incredible small business owners who are at the heart of the economy and communities.
“They are an opportunity to recognise and applaud the passion and tenacity of the nation’s small firms, particularly during such turbulent times.
"Sam at the Snug should be incredibly proud of being shortlisted for this award and we can’t wait to celebrate with them in May.”
