A WORK by one of Britain’s finest marine artists, Henry Redmore (1820-1887), took the top berth at Greenslade Taylor Hunt’s April antiques sale.

The oil on canvas marine scene signed and dated 1873 was bought by a phone bidder for £1,700.

It proved a good day for paintings with a nautical theme at The Octagon Salerooms, East Reach, Taunton.

Two shipping images by British painter John James Wilson Junior were snapped up by the same phone bidder. They sold collectively for £900.

The maritime theme continued with a hand-built model of HMS Victory made to mark the bicentenary of the Battle of Trafalgar, which went for £600.

More aquatic appeal came in a more quirky form - a pair of glass domes containing seashells arranged in a floral display sold for £1,100.

Other prices of note included £700 for a Chinese porcelain teapot decorated with painted figures and £650 for a serpentine front marble commode.

The next sale takes place on Thursday, May 4, from 10am. This will feature a specialist books and maps section.
