THE Northern Lights were visible in the skies across the UK last night (Sunday, April 23), and they were even seen across Somerset.

Overnight the sky turned vivid purple and photographers made the most of the evening.

The phenomenon is caused by the interaction of the solar wind and Earth's magnetic field and upper atmosphere, said the Met Office.

Dean Whitehouse, who took the picture over Clevedon, said: "What a night! With the solar warnings popping off left right and centre I decided to head to clevedon as it's the closest place with some sort of foreground looking north down the Severn!

"Absolutely unbelievable! These pillars could be seen with the naked eye, not quite like Iceland, Norway etc but it will certainly do."

Back in Taunton, Andrew Morgan snapped this picture.

He said: "Looks like we just caught the tail end of a fairly magnificent display of the Northern Lights last night, slightly drowned out by the bright lights of Taunton. The Moon and Venus are to the left."
