RECYCLING collections are being carried out on Sunday (May 14) at a number of locations in Somerset.

Staffing shortages at Somerset Council's waste contractor SUEZ has led to hundreds of pick ups being missed this week.

Outstanding collections are taking place on Sunday in villages and towns around Frome, Wells, Shepton Mallet and parts of Bridgwater.

Collections are happening one day later all week due to the Coronation bank holiday, including collections that would usually be made today (Friday, May12) due to happen on Saturday.

But the staffing shortages mean some collections have already been delayed for a further day this week.

A Somerset Council spokesperson said: "Although crews are working hard to catch up, several areas will not be reached on Saturday and recycling will have to be returned for on Sunday."

Collections in the following villages and towns around Frome, Wells and Shepton Mallet will definitely be getting a Sunday collection, as well parts of Bridgwater.

Hemington, Kilmersdon, Farrington Gurney, Faullkland, Batcome, Cloford, Marston Bigot, Nunney, Trudoxhill, Thytherington, Upton Noble, Wanstrow, Witham Firary, Chantry, Cranmore, Whately, Evercreech, Babington, Charlton, Coleford, Holcombe, Newbury, Stoke St. Micheal. The spokesperson added: "Further areas may also be affected but this will not be known until Saturday afternoon.

"Any residents expecting a recycling collection this Saturday that does not happen should leave their boxes and bags out for crews returning on Sunday.

"Refuse and garden waste collections should not be affected.

"Some collections will also have been disrupted by flooding this week.

"Crews will do their best to return for these when conditions allow and be as flexible as possible.

"Somerset Council sincerely apologises to anyone who has been affected by recent delays to collections."
