With summer just around the corner, many of the 34 per cent of UK households who own a dog may be looking for some beautiful, dog-friendly walking spots to adventure with their four-legged friend.
From coastal walks to countryside trails, Comparethemarket reveal the top spots to take your dog this summer, alongside some top tips for walking in the warmer months.
Top tips for summer dog walks:
Keep in control of your dog
Keep your dog on a lead in designated areas, and if they are off lead at any point, you should be able to recall them in any situation at the first call. It’s also important to consider that not everyone loves dogs, so don’t allow them to approach other visitors without their consent.
When walking through areas with native wildlife or farm animals, its best to use a short lead, to keep your dog from disturbing their habitat.
Check the temperature
Dogs of all ages, breeds and sizes can become ill with heatstroke – even perfectly healthy ones – although it tends to be more serious for younger or older dogs. It’s also more common in those with thick coats or short, flat faces like Pugs.
Check the daily temperatures before you go out, keep them inside in the middle of the day when the sun is hottest and take them for walks early in the morning or evening when it’s cooler.
When it is a reasonable temperature and you do go on a walk, be sure to take water with you, take short breaks and never leave your dog in a parked car.
Anna McEntee from the pet insurance team at Comparethemarket, said: “Part of the joy of having a dog is being able to get out an explore the great outdoors with them and luckily enough the UK is home to many beautiful places to do so.
"However, with warmer weather approaching and summer temperatures getting higher each year, it’s important to consider the risks of perusing new paths with your pooch.
Plan your route, assess the temperature, consider dog friendly amenities and be sure to have the right pet insurance in place, just in case of a heat related emergency.”
