RECYCLING and garden waste collections have been missed in several areas of Somerset today (Tuesday, May 30).

It follows a raft of missed collections at the end of last week.

Somerset Council has apologised to householders whose kerbside collections have not been taken away today.

A spokesperson said efforts were being made to "get things back on track as soon as possible".

Recycling and garden waste collections scheduled for today have been missed in and around Frome, South Petherton, Merriott, Crewkerne and Minehead.

The council says crews will pick them up tomorrow (Wednesday, May 31) and people are being asked to leave their boxes, bags and bins out.

The same goes for garden collections not taken away in the Castle Cary area.

The spokesperson added that collections missed at the end of last week will be picked up today (Tuesday, May 30).

Collections throughout the week had already been put back a day for everyone due to yesterday's bank holiday.

The spokesperson said: "Sorry, there are delays to some collections today.

"We apologise for the disruption and are working with our contractor to get things back on track as soon as possible.

"Recycling and garden waste collections scheduled for today in the following areas will be delayed.

"Crews will return tomorrow, Wednesday 31 May. Please leave you boxes, bags and bins out for collection.

"Recycling collections in and around: Frome, South Petherton, Merriott, Crewkerne, and Minehead. Garden collections in and around: Castle Cary.

"In a few areas waste was not collected at the end of last week. We are sorry for this disruption and will be returning to collect this waste today (Tuesday 30 May).

"Scheduled collections are all a day later this week due to the bank holiday."

Earlier this month, Somerset Council blamed hundreds of delayed kerbside collections on staffing shortages at its waste contractpr SUEZ.
