THE HSBC bank branch in Frome is closing today (Tuesday, June 6).

A spokesperson for the bank in Market Place said the decision to close the branch was taken due to changes in the way customers choose to bank.

The added: "UK branches have fallen by a third over the past five years.

"Nine in 10 customers now transact via telephone, internet or smartphone, whilst 99 per cent of cash withdrawals are made at an ATM."

Among considerations taken by HSBC were the drop in branch user numbers; the types of transactions being undertaken; and alternatives to the branch and distance to alternative services.

A spokesperson for the National Federation of Sub-Postmasters said: "This (closure) will doubtless be disappointing to HSBC customers in Frome.

"However, alternative banking provision is available to local residents at post office branches nearby."

The nearest post offices to the closing branch are in Portway, Frome; Rodden Road, Frome; and Woodlands End, Mells.

They added: "Each of these branches offers banking services - including deposits, free cash withdrawals and balance checks, as well as offering face-to-face access to government services, bill payment, foreign currency, travel insurance and, of course, postal services.

"There are many free-to-use ATMs installed across the UK post office network also."
