A COUNCIL’S team will soon start works on a tree affected by Ash dieback in a popular Taunton’s park.

Taunton Town Council have provided permission to Somerset Council’s Tree Surgeon team to address an Ash Tree in a well-used area of Lyngford Park.

Once treatments start on Tuesday, June 27, the footpath will be closed, the town council also added.

A spokesperson said: “Following a recent inspection, it was identified that the Ash tree has Ash dieback and is in need of urgent attention to help save it.

“The recommended course of action is to pollard the tree at about four metres as it has been identified there is healthy growth from this point.

“Yearly inspections will take place to monitor the situation. The works are planned to commence on Tuesday, June 27, 2023.”

The chair of Taunton Town Council’s communities committee, Cllr Martin Straus has said: “We understand the importance of addressing Ash dieback and that is why we are acting quickly to address the problem.

“We want to inform Lyngford Park users that the footpath will be closed during the works and we apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused during these times and to thank you for your patience.”

As explained on the Woodlands Trust website, the Ash Dieback disease is a fungal disease that originated in Asia.

It is now present all over the UK and is spread easily through wind-blown spores.
