MORE than £7,000 were raised for a hospital ward in memory of a “special man” who was the former landlord of two pubs in Taunton.
Mike Merrick, the former landlord of The Merry Monk and The Half Moon Inn, died on Tuesday, April 11.
Recently, £7,470 from donations from the funeral, a raffle, and a race night in aid of The Fielding Ward at Musgrove Hospital.
Mike’s wife, Angela, said: “Mike had started to organise a raffle himself to buy much-needed equipment for Fielding Ward, where he had been looked after by an amazing team.”
Staff at the Merry Monk previously paid tribute to Mike to “celebrate the life of a special man” and said: “Mike and Angie joined us 10 years ago and revived the business with immediate effect.
“Their 38 years of experience being a pub landlord and landlady has been essential to the popularity of The Merry Monk and Mike will be greatly missed by customers and staff alike. His style in hosting the weekly quiz was truly unique."
Mike also was a true supporter of the NHS, as can be seen by the photo above, which shows Mike ringing the pub bell in Monkton Heathfield during lockdown to acknowledge their efforts.
