A STUNNING Grade II listed gothic church in Wells was initially purchased by a couple as a lockdown project.
Now, what was formerly St John's Church in East Horrington, has been fully restored and is rented out for group stays on accomodation platform CoolStays.
The beautiful 19th century church now features six bedrooms, three bathrooms, and an outdoor hot tub, but it has taken owners Glenn and Maggie "tens of thousands" to restore the church from the state they purchased it in.
Glenn and Maggie "fell in love" with the church during lockdown in the summer of 2021, and felt they were the people to carry out the "ton of work" it needed, despite being advised not to by peers.
The historic building had previously hosted parties, and had severe damage to its extraordinary stained glass windows caused by popped champagne-corks.
Regardless of this, the couple decided to purchase the building and restore it to be used as a group space to help bring people together.
"We wanted the church to restore its place in the community," said Glenn.
Shockingly, Glenn was rushed into urgent open heart surgery shortly after viewing the church.
He remained committed to the cause however, filling out contracts and paper work to get the deal done over his two weeks of recovery in hospital.
The gothic church has since had its stained glass windows completely restored, as well as rennovations to the roof, plumbing, heating, and electrics.
"We want to make sure we preserve people's abilities to really enjoy this place," added Glenn.
Glenn and Maggie welcome groups from all over to stay in their church, and hope that the space will be used to celebrate special occasions such as birthdays and anniversaries.
A stay in the tasteful yet luxurious building costs £800 a night, but parties of up to fourteen people are welcome for those who want to split the cost or simply make the most of this amazing space.
