Taunton’s recycling centre remains closed after a major fire nearly two weeks ago which is still smouldering in places.

Somerset Council can’t say when the site in Priorswood will reopen, but in the meantime the recycling centres in Wellington and Bridgwater have extended their opening hours.

Wellington is usually closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, but is now opening Monday to Sunday. Bridgwater is opening on Wednesdays when it would normally be closed.

Staff from the Taunton site have been redeployed to help at the other two sites during the busiest periods.

Taunton visitors are being advised that Wellington recycling centre is particularly busy on Wednesdays, and they should go to the Bridgwater site instead which is seeing fewer visitors on that day.

The fire at the Taunton site broke out in the early hours of Tuesday, October 3, and around 60 firefighters from around the region were involved in tackling it. It’s thought to have started accidentally.

Somerset Council said the building where recycling is sorted prior to reprocessing is structurally unsafe as a result of the fire.
