THERE were reports of numerous vehicles stuck in flood water yesterday (Monday, December 4).

Police say they received "a large amount of demand" in connection with vehicles stranded in the Somerton area.

A spokesperson for Somerton Police said: "We have received a large amount of demand relating to vehicles stranded in flood water.

"Waves caused by vehicles forcing their way through flood water has resulted in the flooding of vulnerable people's houses.

"Do not attempt to drive through flood water regardless of your vehicle."

A South Somerset Neighbourhood Policing spokesperson said: "Officers from across South Somerset have been dealing with a huge amount of broken down vehicles and collisions due to the road conditions.

"It is important to keep in mind that 30cm of water is enough to move a car."

"They added: "We are aware of flooding across the south of the county. Officers have put police road closures in place in various locations.

"We also have reports of people contravening the road closures.

"These road closures are in place for a reason. Even if you believe your car can get through it is possible that the wake created by your car will push water into houses lining the streets in built up locations causing them to flood.

"In addition if you go through a closure and get stuck it is likely your insurance companies will void your insurance.

"Please pay attention to roads closures and signage and do not contravene them, this is an offence for which you can receive a fine ."
