TRIBUTES have been paid to “the first and only person” to become an Honorary Freeman of Wellington.

Wellington Town Council shared a message yesterday (Thursday, December 28) paying tribute to Richard Hugh Fox, who received the title in 2010.

Mr Fox was recognised for his voluntary efforts with over a dozen organisations and was a prominent figure in the town.

A message from the town council read: “Wellington Town Council is saddened to hear of the passing of Richard Hugh Fox.

“Richard has been a familiar face in Wellington throughout his life, during which time he contributed huge amounts to our community.

“Richard was the first, and currently only, person to become an Honorary Freeman of Wellington in 2010.

“When he was granted this title, he was recognised for his voluntary efforts with over a dozen organisations and was noted as a ‘prominent figure at so many local events, always first to arrive and last to leave and doing any task asked of him’.

“We can attest to this as even in recent years, after Richard surpassed 80 years of age, he continued to be involved with many organisations in the town and helped at several of our events.

“He always insisted on helping in some way, from speaking with the public about our history to folding bunting after our Street Fair.

“No task was above or below him. His knowledge of the history of Tonedale Mill, Toneworks, and the waterways linked to them was second to none and called on by many experts working on those projects.

“Our thoughts are with Richard’s family and friends at this time and we hope that they are able to find peace in the knowledge that Richard made an indelible impact on many people and helped shape our town into the place that we know and love today.

“Wellington is better for having known Richard - he will be sorely missed.”
