A BROADBAND provider has been hit with a massive fine for a number of rule breaches during work in a Somerset town.
Truespeed Communications Ltd has been ordered to pay a total of £34, 277.73 after pleading guilty at Taunton Magistrates' Court to five offences in Frome on July 25 this year.
The Bath-based company admitted failing to secure that any part of five streets which were open and where it was carrying out works was "adequately guarded and lit and that traffic signs were placed and maintained, and where necessary operated...for the guidance or direction of persons using the street, having regard in particular to the needs of people with a disability".
The streets in question were Mildred Road, Hempitts Road, Grange Road, Poplar Close and Beaconsfield Way.
The breaches were contrary to section 65(4) of the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991 and the case was initiated by Somerset Council.
Truespeed was handed on fine of £10,000 and three of £6,000, while there was no separate penalty on the fifth count.
In addition it must pay a £2,000 victim surcharge and £4277.73 costs.
The company must pay the total bill by Friday, January 19
