SOMERSET Nurseries will close at the end of the month as the council’s financial emergency caused cuts to non-statutory services.
Somerset Nurseries-Taunton, Stoke Road, in Stoke St Mary, and Somerset Nurseries- Yeovil, Lufton Depot, on Lufton Trading Estate in Yeovil, will both close at the end of March.
Somerset Council confirmed the news and said they “have had to take some difficult decisions” to make cuts to non-statutory services that “we greatly value but simply cannot afford”.
The nurseries provide seasonal bedding plants and hanging baskets to enhance our local area and our South West in Bloom Award-winning towns.
A spokesperson for Somerset Council said: “The financial emergency facing this and other councils across the country is well documented and will have very real impacts on local people.
“In order to set a balanced budget for 2024/25 and bridge a funding gap of £100m we have had to take some difficult decisions and make cuts to non-statutory services that we greatly value but simply cannot afford.
“Among these are the nurseries at Taunton and Yeovil, which we can confirm will be closing on March 31.”
