A new children's novel set in the Somerset Levels has hit store shelves.
Patricia Sumner, an author and poet based in North Wales, has penned The Globbatrotter, published by West County publisher Ginger Fyre Press.
The story, aimed at nine to 12 year olds, features a mysterious creature who likes to quote Shakespeare as he guides the protagonist through marshes, rhynes and drainage ditches inspired by Somerset Levels.
Ms Sumner draws from her frequent experiences exploring the unique landscapes, visits to Avalon Marshes Centre understanding the local wildlife, and immersing in the rich history of marsh's ancient trackways and man-made islands.
In the story, young Neptune's life is in danger due to an ancient curse and an eerily timed coincidence.
Patricia Sumner said: "When Neptune’s father heads off to the Himalayas in search of rare plants, horrid Aunt Morgana comes to stay – and things quickly go wrong.
"But a mysterious creature persuades him to run away with him and hide in the secret rivers of the Somerset Levels – where even greater dangers await."
Patricia Sumner further details the importance of introducing the works of the great playwright, Shakespeare, into young readers' lives.
She said: "Not many children are introduced to the work of William Shakespeare these days.
"Some children haven’t even heard of him.
"As the Globbatrotter has a funny, almost medieval way of speaking, he was the ideal character through which I could introduce Shakespeare’s writing".
The book also introduces youngsters to the Arthurian Legends, drawing inspiration from the Isle of Avalon (Glastonbury Tor), notorious for its rich folklore.
This element permeates the novel as Patricia Sumner takes a unique approach towards the legends of King Arthur.
Diane Narraway, co-owner of Ginger Fyre Press, highly recommends the The Globbatrotter.
She said: "The Globbatrotter is a fun and fabulous way to introduce your children to both the Arthurian Legends and Shakespeare.
"It’s a wonderful tale, which takes the reader on a magical journey."
The Globbatrotter can now be purchased at Ginger Fyre Press, Amazon, and major bookstores everywhere.
