THIS weekend, residents from across the region will be celebrating the annual Somerset Day.
The event, which is held on May 11 every year, celebrates the best of the county, whether it be small businesses or inspiring individuals.
As explained on the Somerset Day website, the event is inspired by Alfred the Great’s call to arms and the gathering of ‘all the people of Somerset’ to march against the invading Viking army.
Although residents no longer have to fight a battle, organisers of the event still encourage locals to feel inspired by where they live.
To get the message out there, a new website was launched in January last year, designed to inspire residents to appreciate where they live and work. Speaking at the time, Nigel Muers-Raby, founder of Passion for Somerset, said: “We wanted the new site to champion the economy, history, heritage, beauty and culture of Somerset and to promote opportunities for everyone across this diverse county."
