A QUAINT village in Somerset has been ranked among the top ten best villages in the UK.

Mells, near Frome, places sixth on the Telegraph's new list of Britain's 30 Greatest Villages.

Locations named to the list were deemed to have retained their 'authentic character', being beautiful and uncrowded.

The Telegraph described Mells as 'chocolate-box-charming', and particularly commended its pub, abbey, and overall historic roots.

Speaking of Mells, Telegraph reporter Sarah Baxter said: "The handsomest pile is Mells Manor, parts of which date from the 15th century, when it was owned by Glastonbury Abbey; it’s been occupied by the Horner family since 1543.

"It’s not all ancient history though. A lovely outing is a walk by the Mells Stream, via the atmospherically overgrown and crumbly 18th- and 19th-century ruins of Fussell’s Ironworks, which once exported farm tools around the globe.

"Don’t miss the community-owned village shop and cafe, a friendly spot selling basics plus treats from The Real Cake Company in nearby Radstock and Little Jack Horner sausage rolls, whose bakery is in Mells itself."

The article recommended a stay and food at the Talbot country gastro-pub, and pizza at the Walled Garden.
