TODAY we look back to the Somerset County Gazette's coverage surrounding D-Day on June 6 1944.

A number of the listings promote "Salute the Soldier Week", a fundraising and morale-boosting initiative that saw a series of events hosted across the UK.

One promotion for the 'Taunton and District" event reads: "June 17th-24th. Our Chance to show our gratitude to the gallant men who fight for us. Save to the limit!"

Another "Salute the Soldier Week" event listing reads: "The British Soldier. The debt we owe him is enormous. We can never repay it, but we can show him that we are grateful and that we stand behind him, by putting every penny into WAR SAVINGS."

The War Savings campaign was started by the War Office during World War II to raise funds from the British public for the war effort. One of its slogans was "Lend to Defend".

Another snippet from the County Gazette in the week following D-Day reads: "Not half! To save only what we can easily spare – that would be only half a salute. Let us show our grand fighting men something of our real gratitude and admiration – let us save to the limit."

A promotion for the Wellington, Wiveliscombe and District reads: “Defeat of the enemy is the duty of the soldier. Arming him is your duty.”
