TAUNTON residents are being asked to support an application that would make a footpath in the town centre a designated right of way.

The application would add the riverside path near Goodland Gardens, connecting Bridge Street to the path leading to French Weir, to a definitive map.

A Taunton Town Council spokesperson said: “An application is being made to add the riverside path connecting Bridge Street to the path leading to French Weir along the River Tone, to the definitive map.

“If you can help by completing a form to provide a statement, please email info@taunton-tc.gov.uk to request a form.”

The application requires public statements to provide evidence of continuous use.

The town council gathered supporting statements and the spokesperson added that they recorded “a large amount of interest”.

The spokesperson also said: “We have had a large amount of interest and we will today be working through these, providing forms and a map to enable people to submit their evidence easily.”

At a meeting of the then Planning, Development and Transport Committee in March, it was resolved “that the Council supported applying to Somerset Council for a modification to the Definitive Map and Statement, to establish that a Public Right of Way exists beside the river in front of Riverain Lodge running up to The Bridge (A3027)”.
