SIR Elton John's 2023 Glastonbury headline performance has been crowned the nation's greatest ever.
This came to light as Heart Bingo conducted a poll with 2,000 UK respondents, revealing his iconic set claimed the top spot in a vote.
In the lead up to this week's Glastonbury Festival, the participants were asked to vote for their favourite Pyramid Stage headline slot from over the years.
Mr John's 2023 performance stood victorious, bagging 11.8 per cent of the votes, according to the poll.
More than 120,000 spectators witnessed the legendary performance live at Worthy Farm, along with another 7.3 million viewers who tuned in to watch on TV.
Sir Elton narrowly beat David Bowie’s renowned 2000 headline performance, which claimed 10.7 per cent of the vote and is often considered one of the greatest in Glastonbury's history.
In third place, was Adele’s unforgettable 2016 Pyramid Stage performance with 9.3 per cent of the vote.
Among the high-ranking sets were Coldplay in 2016 earning 9 per cent of votes, The Rolling Stones in 2013 with 8.3 per cent, and Beyonce in 2011 clinching 8.1 per cent.
Also, Dolly Parton in 2014 fetched 6.2 per cent, Stormzy in 2019 obtained 5.5 per cent, Paul McCartney in 2004 got 4.8 per cent, and finally, Stevie Wonder in 2010 ended up with 4.6 per cent of votes.
Insights revealed from the poll showed a divide between the male and female respondents, with men split between Elton John and The Rolling Stones, while women leaned towards Elton John.
The poll also drew a line between varying age brackets.
Voters aged 34 or below showed preference towards contemporary artists like Beyonce, Adele and Stormzy.
Meanwhile, those aged 35 and above showed inclinations towards established acts like Elton John and David Bowie.
Sarah Caskie, head of Heart Bingo, said: "With headline acts Dua Lipa, Coldplay and SZA set to take to the Pyramid Stage to wow Glastonbury Festival crowds this weekend, we thought it was perfect timing to find out just who the country feels has delivered the greatest ever Glastonbury headline slot from over the years.
"The poll predictably produced some interesting results and it’s of little surprise to see Elton John’s 2023 set land top spot with 11.8% of the vote following a stunning performance that drew in 120,000 Worthy Farm goers and another 7.3 million people at home.
"In a contest full of stiff competition, Elton beat off David Bowie’s famous 2000 set, which came second with 10.7% of the vote, while Adele’s 2016 performance finished in third on 9.3%.
"Dua Lipa, Coldplay and SZA will no doubt look to rewrite their own history this weekend when they take to the Pyramid Stage, but they certainly have some big boots to fill!"
