Discovery, the service provider for autistic individuals and people with learning disabilities was recently recognised with two awards.

The National Learning Disability and Autism Awards, held in Birmingham, celebrate excellence in supporting people with learning disabilities and recognise the committed work of people and organisations in delivering high-quality care.

They provide support across Somerset and Cornwall.

The Yeovil-based Discovery team, residing at Hillcrest Road, scooped up the first award.

The team was praised for the Lord Rix Supporting Older People with Learning Disabilities Award category, which acknowledges commendable support provided to elderly individuals with learning disabilities and autism.

The Hillcrest team ensures that the three older gentlemen under their care, two of whom have been diagnosed with dementia, lead enriched lives.

This includes assistance in home decoration using dementia-friendly colour schemes, enabling them to maintain their gardening hobbies, and facilitating seamless and comfortable access to medical care.

A member of the judging panel for the awards said: "Meeting the team and Pete (a man they support) was a delight, I could have spent the entire day in conversation with them!

"Their genuine care, compassion, and exceptional support for Pete made them stand out as clear winners in this category."

In collaboration with Wincanton Logistics, Discovery once again earned accolades as they received The Employer of People with a Disability Award.

This award recognises exemplary employers who strive to provide outstanding service to their consumers, specifically people with learning disabilities or autism and their families.

Discovery has been working with Wincanton Logistics for nearly two years, providing disability awareness training, educating colleagues about working with individuals with learning disabilities, and refining interview processes.

Reflecting on the cooperative work, a member of the judging panel said: "Passion, commitment, desire, heart, determination, and a genuine warmth define their approach.

"These qualities drive their unwavering dedication to those they serve, creating a nurturing and supportive environment for all."

Several other employees and teams from Discovery's social enterprise were also named as finalists at the ceremony.

This included Support Workers, Tatiana Hooper and Julie Beveridge of Delmore Road, who were nominated in the Sporting Chance category, and Lead Support Workers, Mike Bruce and Molly Northcott of Old Farm House in Chard, who received recognition in the People's Award Team Category.

A subsidiary of the Dimensions UK group, Discovery supports hundreds of adults with autism and learning disabilities across Somerset, enabling them to enjoy fulfilling lives as active community members.
