A BRASS band is on the shortlist for the Band Project of the Year Award, with voting open to the public.

The West Somerset Brass Band from Watchet is on the shortlist for the award, which recognises bands that have delivered noteworthy projects over the past year including collaborations and tours.

The nomination is due to the band's UK premiere last August of 'Crash Bang Donkey', a piece based on a children's literary work by Jill Newton, an author from the area.

The score was transposed from American composer Joshua Guarisco's original score for his 67-member Sheboygan Symphony Orchestra.

In 2019, the West Somerset Brass Band received a copy of the original score from Ms Newton.

Musical director Niall Watson painstakingly translated it for a brass band, an intricate process completed in spite of the ongoing pandemic.

The premiere took place at the Watchet Summertime event with narration by bass player Colin Whitworth, alongside Ms Newton’s original storyboards.

Votes for the Award can be cast via the Brass Bands England website by members of the public up until 9am on July 11.
