A GUIDED walk of Yeovil's wartime history is part of an exhibition telling the story of the town centre’s past, present and future, dating back to 1800.
The brand new exhibition opens this month in Yeovil Art Space, as part of the Story of Yeovil art and heritage project.
A team at Yeovil Art Space has worked with the South Somerset Heritage Collection, and with many contributions from community members and local historians, to create a brand new exhibition in the town centre gallery.
The show will incorporate postcard collections, historical photographs, objects and
historical materials. The exhibition gives a chance to see fascinating items from archive collections; a very special scrapbook from a Yeovil resident, a mosaic from the Coronation Hotel & Vaults and 1950s store tokens from Denners Department Store will be on display amongst many more.
The public is also invited to take part in events, walking down the ‘memory lane’ of the past high street and sharing their stories, but also learning about the architectural history of some of the buildings in town from different eras.
Not your usual heritage exhibition, ‘About Town - Your Way’ will provide new ways to involve visitors in, for example, a town centre scavenger hunt and a large-scale map displayed across the gallery inviting everyone to share their thoughts, stories and ideas about the future of the town.
The exhibition also commemorates the new public artwork ‘Shapes of Yeovil’ created by YOU&ME Architecture.
The first and foremost public artwork for Yeovil will be located at the Triangle, Middle Street, bringing voices of the community together and celebrating the wealth of culture and heritage in the town.
Limited editions of a new collection of merchandise will also be launched during the exhibition.
Yeovil's War Time History Guided Walk will take place on Wednesday July 24, from 10:30am to 11:45am, costing £8/pp with booking essential.
Participants will be walked through Yeovil’s backstreets and town centre, led by an experienced team at South Somerset Heritage Collection, discussing how the town coped during the World Wars, and exploring the sites of vanished buildings.
Other events during the exhibition include a Drop-in Cyanotype workshop with Lisa Cheung: Saturday July 13, from 1 to 4pm, which is free and open to all.
The exhibition runs from July 6 to August 31, open Wednesday to Friday, 12pm to 4pm, and Saturday 11am to 4pm, at Yeovil Art Space Gallery, Unit 13-15, Vicarage Street, Quedam Centre, Yeovil.
