A SHEPTON Mallet woman has received hundreds of cards to celebrate her 107th birthday.
Joyce Jones, a former accountant born in 1917, celebrated her 107th birthday on July 8 at her care home in Kingswood Court, Bristol, where she's lived for eight years.
Joyce was born and raised in Somerset, starting work at a glove factory in Radstock where she met her husband Stan.
The centenarian then moved with her husband to work as an accountant at Babysham, in Shepton Mallet, where she was one of the first people to use a Comptometer, the first mechanical calculator.
Staff at Kingswood Court said Joyce has always had a "wonderful sense of humour and she still enjoys cracking jokes to make staff and residents laugh".
Joyce told the BBC: "I’ve done remarkably well to be here. There aren’t many that would make it, I suppose."
She added that she had "lots to be thankful for".
Joyce enjoyed lots of travel with her husband Stan, and birthday cards from all over the world, as far-flung as Canada, flooded in for Joyce's special day.
Staff put out an appeal for cards to celebrate Joyce's birthday on social media, with the aim of receiving 107 cards to mark the occasion.
Locals and kindhearted strangers from around the world certainly answered the call, with almost 900 cards arriving at Kingswood Court, and many birthday gifts and chocolates hand-delivered.
Residents also enjoyed a live performance from singers Tracey and John on the special day.
Kingswood Court said in a Facebook post: "Cheers everyone for joining to make this Birthday memorable for Joyce. Kingswood Court Care Home says a warm Thank you."
