A GLASTONBURY running club has raised £500 for the town's food bank after taking on the Bunny Hop challenge in Shapwick.
The Street Striders were "delighted" to present the Street and Glastonbury Food Bank, Bridging The Gap, with a cheque for £500 on June 25 - along with the chair of Street Parish Council Bryan Knickerbocker.
The funds were raised during the club's annual community run and walk, The Bunny Hop, which is a 7.5-mile multi-terrain run in the village of Shapwick on Easter Monday.
Each year the proceeds are divided between a local charity and towards enhancements of Shapwick's village in return for allowing the club to use the fields, land, footpaths and facilities for the day.
A spokesperson for The Street Striders said: "We met the lovely volunteers of [Glastonbury] Bridging the Gap which was our charity choice for this year, including Mary Powell, Michael Cobb and other trustees of the charity.
"The charity was established by Churches Together in Glastonbury, a group of churches in the town.
"They distribute food throughout the BA6 and BA16 postcodes, only to those who have been referred by local agencies, including Social Services, care agencies and Citizens Advice.
"Mary explained that the charity delivers food parcels to those in financial crisis and need a little help. They all work extremely hard in providing invaluable support to local families and people in need. It really was an honour to meet them and do our bit for the community."
In Glastonbury, food donations can be dropped off at any of the churches, or to the supermarket collection boxes in Morrisons and Earthfare.
In Street, food donations can be made to the collection box in Lidl. More information can be found at glastonburyandstreetfoodbank.org.uk.
Street Striders Running Club is welcoming new members, both experienced and new to running. It meets on Mondays at 6:30pm and 7:30pm and Thursday at 7pm, at The Victoria Sports and Social Club in Street.
A spokesperson for the group said: "We run in varied groups at paces to suit everyone, as nobody will be left behind.
"We also organise a couch to 5k program for absolute beginners on the Crispin and Strode campus fields and provide our very own bridging the gap service with our ‘Steady Striders’ group on the early Monday session to help move from the C25k program to a regular club runner.
"Our aim is to show the benefits of joining a club which can be influential in helping with physical and mental wellbeing, meeting new people, and running in a safe environment."
