A HUSBAND-and-wife team decided to open a Thai food eatery in Taunton town centre to fill “a gap in the market”.

John Kelsall and his wife Jutamas opened Baan Thai on Magdalene Lane a few weeks ago.

Baan Thai’s menu includes dishes from the south of Thailand, but the couple’s idea originally was to have a café to sells pottery and collectibles.

John said: “There was a gap in the market in terms of Thai food and we decided to open. We used to provide food at fairs and festivals.

“We are trying to make Thai food an everyday event rather than something to order once a month after payday. We want to make it more accessible.

“The area we’re in is great because is a pedestrian area and there’s a lot of potential.

“We have moved away from single-use plastic, and everything is more sustainable.

"Feedback from customers has been good and very positive."

At Baan Thai customers can eat in or take away and they can also order online.

Some of the dishes are ready-to-serve, for customers who work nearby and are on their lunch breaks, and there's a small range of other dishes cooked to order.

John and Jutamas said that all of their food is cooked using homemade recipes.

They also make pottery and crafts that they sell at the restaurant.
