POLICE arrested two people after a "suspected theft of some beer" from a supermarket in Taunton town centre as they tackled anti-social behaviour.
Avon and Somerset Police officers on foot patrol last week detained a man and a woman on the High Street after a suspected theft from Tesco Express on East Reach.
A spokesperson for the force said the two people “were arrested and taken into custody”.
The spokesperson also said: “Our shift began at 09.30am on foot patrol in Taunton town centre.
“First, we chatted with the manager of Poundland whose store is a frequent target for shoplifters.
“He said that thanks to our hi-vis patrol, none of the ‘usual suspects’ had appeared that morning.
“We put him in contact with the neighbourhood PCSO who will provide ongoing support.
“At around 10.30am, we detained a man and a woman in the High Street for suspected theft of some beer from Tesco Express in East Reach.
“They were arrested and taken into custody.”
The force also shared updates from other foot patrols in Yeovil, Glastonbury, and Bridgwater.
The spokesperson said: “Arriving in Yeovil town centre, we spoke to the security guard in Marks & Spencer and patrolled the shop floor, speaking to customers.
“We also caught up with the Town Centre Crime Reduction Partnership and the manager of The William Dampier pub about local issues, including street drinking.
“We’ll update the local neighbourhood team so they can continue to provide support.
“We travelled to Glastonbury in the afternoon, bumping into Cllr Michael White, Deputy Mayor, by the Abbey.
“We explained the purpose of our foot patrols – to deter and disrupt anti-social behaviour (ASB) in our communities.
“We walked through the street market and chatted to stallholders about the issues they’d been experiencing.”
“Later, we dealt with some ASB near St John the Baptist’s Church. We spoke to everyone involved and resolved the issue, giving advice on future behaviour.
“Finally, we visited Bridgwater and patrolled McDonald’s, Asda and the nearby retail park to deter crime in the area and reassure local businesses.
“10 hours and 15,000 steps later, we finished our shift, all in a day's work.”
