MINEHEAD will celebrate its rich wartime heritage this month with a special convoy of military vehicles hosted by the Exmoor National Park.

The impressive event, North Hill on the Radar, will allow residents of Minehead, of all ages, to reflect on and celebrate its military past.

Taking place on Saturday, August 17 at 10.30am, the convoy will travel from the old hospital site in Minehead to the World War II tank training grounds and Radar Station on North Hill.

The event is free to attend but donations to CareMoor for Exmoor are welcomed in order to continue the upkeep of the National Park and its special qualities.

In World War II, North Hill was closed to civilians and brought under military control, becoming one of the country's five new tank training ranges for British, American and Canadian troops.

Tucked down the coastal slopes of Minehead also lay a top-secret Radar Station, which was one of 244 across the country and part of a coastal defensive chain to identify shipping and low flying aircraft.

The radar stations were constantly in operation throughout the day and were often run by women from the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force.

This rich history will be celebrated at North Hill on the Radar where attendees will have the opportunity to discover more through displays, a guided walk around the site and activities to discover North Hill’s wildlife.
