WORKS to clean some of the sewers in a Taunton area with “previous flooding issues” is “expected to take place in the coming months”.

Wessex Water confirmed said they are working to improve the wider sewerage network in Obridge Close.

The wet weather in recent winter has been an ongoing issue, the company said, adding that they are working on the network with local authorities.

A Wessex Water spokesperson said: “We are aware of previous flooding issues experienced in the Obridge Close area and, alongside ongoing improvements to the wider sewerage network, we are working with local representatives and the Obridge allotments while exploring measures to tackle the situation.

“Following the completion of surveys of the local network, the process of cleaning and removing any impediments within some of sewers is expected to take place in the coming months.

“The substantial wet weather of recent winters has been an ongoing issue in Taunton, and we are continuing to work closely with local authorities and other partners over how surface water is managed throughout the town.’’

Councillor Tom Deakin, Taunton North, said: “Following the flooding earlier this year, Wessex Water undertook some surveying of the sewage pipe that runs down Obridge Lane and under the allotments.

“This particular pipe is quite large and takes a sharp bend underneath the allotments.

“At this point in the pipe, a large amount of silt has built up, reducing the capacity of the pipe quite substantially.

“For this reason, a specialist contractor is required to survey and undertake the work - this pipe hasn't been cleaned for a very long time.

“Wessex Water are in contact with the required contractor and works are planned to take place by December (hopefully sooner).

“Their aim is that this work which requires cladding and clearing of the pipe, will increase the capacity and therefore reduce the flooding risk next time we have high amounts of rain.

“I will keep people updated as I hear more.”
