YMCA Taunton has reached the semi-finals of the prestigious YMCA Youth Matters Awards 2024.
The organisation's Community Pantry initiative, a monthly affordable food market, has been shortlisted in the 'Health & Wellbeing Project of the Year' category, among 100 other national entries.
The annual YMCA Youth Matters Awards celebrate the exceptional achievements of young people and the vital services that YMCAs all over the UK provide.
The nomination is an acknowledgement of the significant impact of YMCA Taunton's Community Pantry project.
It became an essential resource for the community after it was launched during the 2020 lockdown phase.
The pantry supports more than 50 individuals and their families each month.
Clare Langley, general manager of YMCA Taunton, said: "We are incredibly honoured to be recognised for our Community Pantry initiative.
"This project embodies our commitment to fostering health and wellbeing within our community, and we are grateful for the support we've received from volunteers, donors, and local residents."
In addition to providing affordable food, the Community Pantry plays an essential role in helping families combat the ongoing cost of living crisis.
It helps families in reducing their food bills, allowing them to use the savings for other essentials.
A user pointed out that "The Community Pantry has allowed me to top up my gas and electric."
The winners of the Youth Matters Awards will be announced in November.
The decision is based on public votes and the judgement of a panel.
Public voting is open until August 26.
The YMCA Taunton team encourages everyone to vote for their community-supporting initiative.
