SOMERSET Council leaders have released a joint statement addressing 'unrest and disorder' at anti-immigration protests across the country.

It comes after two men from Yeovil were arrested at the 'Enough is Enough' protest in Weymouth, which saw two police officers injured - one was hit by a bottle, and another was punched in the face.

The statement as follows was signed by the following councillors: Cllr Bill Revans, Leader of Somerset Council and Leader of Somerset Council Liberal Democrat Group; Cllr Mike Best, Chair of Somerset Council; Cllr David Fothergill, Leader of Somerset Council Conservatives Group; Cllr Leigh Redman, Leader of Somerset Council Labour Group; Cllr Dave Mansell, Leader of Somerset Council Green Group; Cllr John Hunt, Leader of Somerset Council Independent Group.

On behalf of all the people of Somerset, we are compelled to speak out publicly to condemn the recent unrest and disorder which we have sadly seen elsewhere in the country.

Any act of violence or racism is deplorable, and we support calls for those involved to be swiftly brought to justice.

We must stand against anyone who seeks to spread hate. We must stand together with people of all ages affected, many of whom have fled horrific situations to find safety. We stand in solidarity with all those communities who have been affected.
