DESPITE announcing it would 'close forever' last year, Shepton Mallet Prison's future has been secured in a landmark deal.
The Cove Group - which has managed the prison since 2017 - has announced its acquisition of the historic Somerset tourist attraction from previous owners City & Country.
An announcement to close the site to the public in November 2023 caused uproar, but came due to a 'disheartening lack of support' to safeguard the prison by the previous owners, according to Cove Group CEO, Joel Campbell.
Although negotiations between the Cove Group and City & Country led to the prison remaining open, it was soon revealed by the County Gazette that plans were in place to partially demolish the site in place of new luxury flats and townhouses.
In January 2024, Simon Marner, City & Country's Land and Property Director, confirmed this, and told the County Gazette that his company 'remained interested' in developing the site for residential purposes, which would include the addition of 'community heritage spaces' and a café.
However, the 'landmark deal' announced on Wednesday, August 7, guarantees the future of Shepton Mallet Prison for years to come.
Joel Campbell, CEO of Cove Group, said: "This marks the biggest step forward in our 10-year relationship with Shepton Mallet Prison.
"From our initial a bid to buy it from the MOJ to the recent threat of closure, our dedication has never wavered.
"Now, after months of intense negotiations, we have secured the future of Shepton Mallet Prison, protecting it from the threat of closure, preserving its historical significance, and securing jobs for its dedicated staff.’’
“This acquisition is not just about preserving history; it’s about celebrating and revitalising it.
"We are overjoyed to embark on this journey of transformation, ensuring that Shepton Mallet Prison remains a beacon of heritage tourism for generations to come.”
