Residents of a block of flats in Wells are partaking in a two-month pilot project to simplify the recycling of electrical items.

The scheme was created with the support of Material Focus and the Fixy programme, a partnership between Somerset Council and Resource Futures.

The residents of St Athelm Lodge will deposit small electrics into a pink wheelie bin for fortnightly collection.

Items with a plug, battery, or cable that will fit into the bin are recyclable.

Other items such as hairdryers, toasters, headphones, and DVD players can also be processed.

During the unveiling of the project, Fixy's 'Tech Amnesty' collected smart tech for reuse like smartphones, tablets, and laptops.

Cllr Dixie Darch, lead member for environment and climate change, said: "We’re pleased to support this project; it makes it easy for residents to recycle and helps them to do the right thing."

Linda Hull, Fixy coordinator, said: "With over 11,000 households living in flats across Somerset, this pilot is an important first step in understanding how best to help such residents recycle their small electricals."
