A BUILDING was damaged by a fire that started on a lawn in a village near Taunton early this morning (Saturday, August 10).

The fire broke out in North Curry at around 2.16am and fire crews found a detached property and outbuilding with 20 per cent of the ground floor well alight, 10 per cent of the first floor alight, and 5 per cent of the roof alight.

A spokesperson for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: “Fire appliances attended reports of a lawn on fire, which on arrival was spreading to the building.

“Crews requested assistance from a further two appliances, the water carrier and the aerial ladder platform.

“Crews then reported that the roof of the building was involved in fire, and were at work with one hose reel jet and one main jet, with two breathing apparatus wearers.

“Crews then requested assistance from a further two appliances, and police to close the road.

“Crews later confirmed this is a detached property and outbuilding with 20 per cent of the ground floor well alight, 10 per cent of the first floor alight, and five per cent of the roof alight.

“Also, an external oil tank involved. Crews working with two main and one hose reel jets and have requested isolation of overhead powerlines.

“Crews then requested a further two appliances, making the total up to seven.

“Three fire engines and a water carrier remain in attendance at this incident.

“The crews are removing roof tiles to expose any hot spots as well as turning over and dampening down within the property using gas monitors and a hose reel jet.”
