WHAT'S better than a sizeable, delicious, gourmet flapjack to raise your spirits on a gloomy August afternoon?

Simple answer: three sizeable, delicious, gourmet flapjacks.

That was exactly my thoughts when I stepped inside the doors of the magnificent Flapjackery, located in the heart of Wells, on Sadler Street.

The small chain has a few stores across the southwest, namely its other Somerset branch found in Minehead.

Inside, you’re immediately greeted by the main counter, which is packed with countless flavours of flapjacks, several of which have won coveted Taste of the West Awards.

The shop also sells fudge and chocolate, which although tempting, I remained focused on the task at hand.

The Flapjackery has several offers for flapjack-fanatics such as myself who intend on picking up several flapjacks in one go - in my case, three for £14, which I felt was a fair price.

For larger purchases, they even package the food into a premium-feel box, a nice touch which would make a great gift for any flapjack enthusiast.

After taking my time to choose three delectable options, I prepared to take upon myself the selfless task of devouring these three treats in the name of journalism.

Of course, to cater to all tastes, I began with a humble plain flapjack, a true test of the shop’s craftsmanship.

It was simply perfect – and the fact that simplicity had been done so well was a good sign for the other flavours.

The oats were perfectly cooked – soft but not gooey – and the texture was a perfect balance too, not too dry, and by no means soggy, but still holding onto that wonderful buttery taste which all flapjack enjoyers crave.

Secondly, I bit into the millionaire shortbread flavour, which was just as tasty as it sounds, although slightly too sweet for me to consume all in one go. It had all the oaty-goodness of the plain flapjack, but with extra sweet caramel, topped with solid, rich chocolate.

Finally, the chocolate fudge flapjack marked the last on my list.

Melancholically, I chomped down, knowing the joy would soon be over. However, I certainly saved the best ‘til last, as this creation was simply sensational.

It’s hard to put into words how good this one was so I will keep it simple. Imagine a flapjack made with oats, entirely covered in chocolate, and then a slab of hard chocolate on top, drizzled with fudge.

If you’re ever in Wells, or Minehead, or anywhere near a Flapjackery, I strongly suggest you take a look inside.
