THIS month five years ago Taunton lost a beloved countryside cafe after it was severely damaged by fire.

Roads were closed surrounding the Pines Cafe, between Taunton and Bridgwater in the Quantock Hills, as firefighters battled to control the blaze on August 21 2019.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue was alerted to the fire by passersby at around 4am that morning.

A spokesman for the fire service said at the time: "DSFRS control room received two reports from passersby regarding an established fire at a café at the above location.

"Three engines from Taunton, Bridgwater and Nether Stowey were mobilised along with an aerial ladder platform and a water bowser from Bridgwater.

"Upon arrival the crews confirmed a commercial premises well alight and requested the attendance of two further crews, who also came out from Taunton and Bridgwater."

The spokesman added: "The property was 75 per cent damaged by fire before the crews were able to get the incident under control using main jets, breathing apparatus and thermal imaging cameras."

A post from Pines Cafe following the fire said: "We are all devastated by the recent fire at The Pines countryside cafe.

"We would like to thank the Fire service, Police, the local community and our loyal customers for their assistance, help and offers of support at this difficult time.

"We are working with our partners to ascertain the cause of the fire and discussing our options with regard to clear up and re-building."

Unfortunately, the cafe has been closed ever since the fire. It had been in the same family since around 1977, and managed by the same person since 2001.

It had around eight employees and was a hugely popular spot for walkers, visitors and residents.

Thankfully, Misty the Pines cat was found safe and well, cowering in a nearby hedge.
