Young and aspiring filmmakers have a unique opportunity to pursue their passion for film this October 2024 as the British Film Institute (BFI) partners with Somerset Film to deliver the BFI Film Academy Short Course in Minehead.
This is a seven-day intensive programme, designed solely for 16- to 19-year-olds in the area who are eager and passionate about exploring the world of filmmaking and taking their first steps into the industry.
The course itself will run on set dates from Saturday, October 19, to Friday, November 1, 2024, offering its participants a variety of exciting and action-packed events: from hands-on experience in filmmaking, masterclasses with industry professionals and career guidance, this comprehensive course promises to be a fulfilling opportunity! Successful participants will also achieve a nationally recognised NCFE qualification.
This is an initiative that aims to provide young creatives with an expansive understanding of the various roles in the film industry 0 from, set design and casting, to finance and electrical work.
Notable guest speakers at the academy include Jeremy DeCoursey, who is known for his work on projects such as The Batman and Solo: A Star Wars Story, Paddington, and Fast and Furious 6.
Lily Limmer will also be in attendance – a Sustainability Coordinator for Warner Brothers and Apple TV, who is currently working as both a producer and a director. Other guest speakers from past academies have included Catherine Goldschmidt (known for her work on House of Dragon), award-winning filmmaker Sophie Littman, Harry Potter editor Mick Audsley, and Company Founder Stephanie Castelete-Tyrell.
Grace Morgan, a writer and director who herself attended the BFI Film Academy, shares her experience, commenting that: “The BFI Film Academy short course helped me connect with other local young filmmakers and guided me on identifying the roles I wanted to pursue in the industry”.
The course costs £25, however bursaries are available, and the fee can be waived for those in need. Applications are open until midnight October 6, 2024. Young people interested are encouraged to apply, and do not need prior experience or to be studying media (or related courses).
