The West Somerset Brass Band recently returned from their much-anticipated visit to Saint Renan in Brittany.

The trip was part of the ongoing cultural exchange organised by the Watchet/Saint Renan Twinning Societies.

It took place from August 21 to August 25 and marked the band's return to France after a six-year hiatus due to the pandemic.

The band, along with members of the Twinning Society, followed a packed itinerary that included trips to Brest, Quimper, the Pointe Saint Mathieu lighthouse, the Saint Renan Waterpark, and a beach afternoon.

They performed at various venues including the La Forge brewery in Plouarzel and the Mairie of Saint Renan.

A significant moment was the presentation to the mayor of two artworks by late Watchet artist Alex Hollweg, gifted by his family as a symbol of the enduring friendship between the communities.

As a musical tribute, the band played Chantons en Choeur, a piece arranged by for these twinning visits.

The band also played The Old Rugged Cross in memory of former bandmate Pete Wilson, acknowledging the presence of Jean Wilson and Marilyn Binding, whose late husbands were key figures in the band and Twinning Society.

The society, which has been fostering these international bonds since 1979, is keen to welcome new members, especially younger ones, to ensure the continued success of these exchanges.

Mary Rhodes, chairman of the Twinning Society, said: "Joining the Twinning Society is a wonderful opportunity to experience family life in another country and to be part of something that truly strengthens our community ties."

The society is eager to welcome music lovers, Francophiles, or anyone who enjoys fostering international friendships.
