Residents from Minehead and the surrounding area can now take advantage of a new Minehead Swimming and Leisure (MSL) membership for as little as £1.

The initiative, launched by MSL, allows locals to show their support for the planned indoor public swimming pool and leisure centre, set to open in 2029.

By becoming a member now, residents can stay updated on project progress, attend member meetings, and participate in decision-making.

Peter Wellstood, chairman of the society, said: "The need for a pool here in Minehead is, we believe, very important for youngsters to have the chance to swim safely; also the elderly to help keep themselves mobile, and all ages in between.

"The Bristol Channel is not always the safest place to swim, with strong tides and sometimes not very clean water; hence the need for an indoor pool 12 months of the year."

He added that the planned facility will be in keeping with the surrounding area, with sustainable energy usage at the forefront of planning.

Mr Wellstood said: "The pool will have easy access for people with mobility problems.

"We also hope to offer space for physio work and parents with smaller children to help gain confidence in the water.

"It can also be used by schools, clubs and of course you, the community."

MSL operates as a Community Benefit Society, meaning members can buy shares worth £1 each.

However, every member gets one vote regardless of how many shares they purchase, preventing a controlling interest based on financial capacity.

The funds raised will be used to advance the project, which is currently in the site-selection stage.

Interested individuals can find more information and download membership application forms on the MSL website, www.mineheadswim.org, where updates will also be posted.

A Facebook group, Minehead Swimming & Leisure, is open for public discussions about the project.

The society plans to organise information points around Minehead in the coming weeks for residents to meet the project team and discuss the initiative.
