AN AWARD-WINNING Somerset farm shop is hosting a Mexican tasting evening this September featuring dishes inspired by the North American country while supporting Somerset and Westcountry producers too (2024).

Rumwell Farm Shop’s event on Thursday, September 12 will include ingredients sourced from as nearby as possible including beef tacos made from its Angus cattle hand-reared on its nearby farm.

Anne Mitchell, Partner at the farm shop on the A38 between Taunton and Wellington, says: “Following the sellout success of our Mexican Tasting Evening last year, we’re hosting another similar event this September.

“Provenance, sustainability and keeping food miles down are whole heartedly part of our mission here.

“We make real food from real ingredients onsite and like to showcase other local and regional producers when we can.

“It’s very important that we use as many locally and regionally sourced items in our dishes as possible and that produce grown and reared on our own farm, just four miles from the shop, is included on our menus when we can.

"Whether that’s our own pork or beef, eggs, apples or potatoes. Obviously, we can’t get lemons and limes locally, but we can source most of the items we need nearby.

“So, to showcase some of our home reared and grown produce, we’re inviting everyone to come along and enjoy a traditional Mexican meal made by our wonderful chefs that champion our county and region’s produce.

“The evening will be held in the modern and comfortable surroundings of our Rumwell Orchard extension with delightful views of our apple orchard too – it’s a taste of Mexico with Somerset all around you.

“So, it’s time to don your best sombrero and corral your friends and family, and a vivir que son dos dias (seize the day).”

Doors open at 7pm. Tickets £19.95 per person including a main meal and side tasters. A licensed bar will be open for those aged 18 and above to purchase drinks too.

Online booking is essential via www.rumwellfarmshop.com/mexican-night-thursday-september-12-2024/.

The menu includes a main of traditional beef chilli featuring Rumwell’s Angus minced beef, hand-reared on its nearby family-run farm, and served with Mexican red rice.

There will also be side tasters of a mini chicken burrito, which is a flour tortilla, filled and rolled with beans, peppers, chicken and tomatoes.

Anne added: “We’ll also have a Mini Veg Taco – a small corn taco shell with a spicy bean filling, topped with sour cream, avocado and cheese and a Mexican grilled corn, which is wedges of grilled corn flavoured with lime, coriander and chilli.

“Your meal will be plated and served at your table by our team of friendly and professional waiting staff.

“A starter of a bowl of nachos – tortilla chips baked with salsa, cheese and jalapenos, topped with guacamole and sour cream – will be available to buy separately on the night for £3.50 each.

“A dessert of Churros & Chocolate Sauce, which is a deep-fried Mexican doughnut, tossed in sugar and served with chocolate sauce, will also be sold separately on the night for £6.50 each.

“Gluten free, vegan and vegetarian options will also be available. Please let us know about dietary requirements when booking, as we need to prepare items in advance.”
