PART of the M5 in Somerset will be shut for nine hours tomorrow night.

The northbound carriageway between junction 26 (Wellington) and junction 25 (Taunton) will be closed from 9pm on Tuesday until 6am on Wednesday.

This will allow National Highways to carry out resurfacing work. A diversion will be in place via the A38 and the A358/Toneway.

A spokesperson for Willand Parish Council – which is located just over the border in Devon – said: “Please note, on Tuesday, September 10, maintenance will be carried out on the M5 northbound.

“The road will be closed between junctions 26 (Wellington) and 25 (Taunton) from 9pm to 6am.

“Diversion via A38. If you have any questions, call the National Highways Contact Centre on 0300 123 5000, who will pass your query to the team, or email info@nationalhighways.co.uk.”

There will be separate closures from the start of next week around junction 27 (Tiverton, Willand) to allow National Highways to carry out essential repairs to the concrete that makes up the base layer of motorway.

“As we need to remove the surface layers above the concrete, we’ll need to set up a contraflow to keep everyone on the motorway safe,” a National Highways spokesperson said.

“We’ll be starting near the central reservation, moving across the carriageway.

“We’ll make sure three lanes are open in each direction during the October half term, and we’re due to complete our improvements in spring 2025, ahead of the Easter holidays.”
